A mid-century modern bed frame does more than hold a mattress — it sets the architectural tone of the room. Low-profile platform designs, tapered legs, and warm walnut or teak finishes are what separate a true MCM bed from a generic platform bed with a walnut-look finish. Here's how to buy the real thing.

Platform vs. canopy vs. frame-and-headboard

Platform beds dominate MCM. Low-profile, no box spring needed, often with integrated headboard. This is the look most buyers want.

Frame-and-headboard sets (headboard + side rails + footboard) were the mainstream American form. Broyhill Brasilia and Kent Coffey produced these in volume.

Canopy and four-poster MCM beds are rare and usually studio-craft pieces (Wharton Esherick, Nakashima). Museum-tier.

The makers to know

George Nelson for Herman Miller. The Thin Edge and Pretzel Bed (1950s) are the canonical MCM platform designs. Originals are rare and expensive; Herman Miller has reissued select Nelson pieces. Expect $3,500–$8,000 for vintage in good condition.

Hans Wegner for Getama. Danish daybed/platform hybrid designs. Oak or teak with leather headboards. $2,500–$6,000.

Børge Mogensen for Fredericia. Straightforward Danish platform beds, quiet in design, built to last. $1,500–$3,500.

Broyhill Brasilia and Premier. American platform beds in walnut with sculpted headboards. Full-size $400–$900, queen $600–$1,400.

Lane First Edition and Acclaim. Headboard-and-footboard sets in walnut. $500–$1,100 for a complete queen set.

Paul McCobb Planner Group. Architectural frames with iron legs and birch or walnut panels. $1,200–$2,800.

Kipp Stewart for Drexel Declaration. Walnut platform beds with reeded detail. $1,500–$3,500.

Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin. Chrome and velvet upholstered platform beds. Luxe American MCM. $2,000–$5,000.

New production worth buying

  • Herman Miller Nelson Platform Bed reissues — licensed, authentic, $4,000+

  • Modernica Case Study bed — licensed, $2,500–$3,500

  • DWR's MCM-inspired platform beds — DWR produces Nelson and Saarinen reissues under license

Avoid "MCM-inspired" beds from mass-market online retailers — most are MDF with walnut-look laminate and hollow legs. They look OK new, age badly, and hold zero resale value.

What to check before buying vintage

Mattress size compatibility. Many 1960s American queens are slightly different than modern queens — measure the interior opening before buying.

Side rail joinery. Bolt-through construction with hanger bolts is original and sound. Screw-and-glue construction is a later fix, usually means the original connectors broke.

Headboard attachment. On platform beds the headboard is usually bolted to the back of the frame. Loose or repaired bolt holes reduce value 15–25%.

Veneer condition on the headboard. The most visible surface. Water damage from pillows or bedside glasses is common.

Leg integrity. Tapered walnut legs should be straight and solid. Cracked or replaced legs need to be factored into your offer.
